Songsmiths Safer Spaces Policy

At Songsmiths Canada, we are committed to fostering a space where people of all gender identities, abilities, ages, cultures, and sexual orientations feel welcome and respected. Any form of discrimination will not be tolerated. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for violence, harmful language, or behavior that perpetuates oppression.

While we aim to create an inclusive environment, it is not the role of Songsmiths to censor speech or shield audiences from ideas or opinions they may disagree with. Audience members are encouraged to challenge and critique views expressed on our platform, but may not interfere with others’ freedom to express their own perspectives. Our programming decisions are made with care and consideration for inclusivity and respect.

We acknowledge that no space can be completely free from harm or oppression, but we strive to make this community as welcoming and engaging as possible. Everyone involved in Songsmiths events and services is encouraged to actively contribute to an atmosphere where the safety and dignity of others is upheld.

If you ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe, please contact Ashley Bieniarz directly. We take any concerns seriously and will address them promptly. We are committed to community-building through restorative justice values, assessing each situation on a case-by-case basis.

To uphold this commitment, we pledge to:

  • Challenge our own privileges and biases.

  • Recognize individuals by using their correct pronouns and avoid gendered language.

  • Provide judgment-free inclusion by acknowledging and supporting the unique barriers others face.

  • Ensure everyone’s voice is heard and respected.

  • Continue to learn, support, and encourage each other in creating a safer space.

We welcome feedback and ongoing discussion on improving this policy. If you have any questions or suggestions, please reach out using our contact page.

Thank you for your understanding, support, and collaboration.
